Good shoe. Could be better
I have loved these shoes so far. I am worried that the quality is substandard. I see them falling apart in a year (though I hope not). If the company would use good material instead of trying to be "eco-friendly" with recycled material, I would have rated it a 5. Chinese plants emit tremendous pollution in spite of the company's promise of enviro-friendly production.
Great Green Shoes
These shoes are great. I just got them, and right out of the box they feel snug and comfortable. The bumps in the soles feel nice when you walk. They are light and fit nicely around my foot; easy to slip on and off. They seem pretty sturdy too. The bottoms have some pretty good traction that would make me feel safe walking on a slippery surface. Best of all, they're eco-friendly!
stylish, comfy, well made, sweatshop free... these shoes are great!
i was a little thrown off by the bumpy insole, but after trying it it really is nice. i ride a bicycle with toe clips, and these fit very snugly in the clips. also, the bumpy insole is super comfortable for biking. when walking, the bumps take a little getting used to, but on a bike, without the impact that comes with walking, the bumps massage your feet and feel quite nice.
aesthetically, i love these shoes. i wear size 13, and the wrong shoe can really make my feet look oversized. the light color on top, dark color on bottom design seems to balance out the size of the shoe, drawing attention away from the tip of the toe and thus keeping my feet from looking huge. a pair of chucks on the other hand have the opposite effect, and look clownish when they get to a certain size. More generally speaking, the shoes are natural, but retain a certain "sharp" look thanks to the lack of laces. plus, the logo is very unobtrusive, and if you are the anti-corporate advertisement type, the only logo on the top of the shoe is on a little flap that you can easily cut off to go logo-free. and hell, on that note, the things are made out of white canvas... break out some acrylic paint and decorate these kicks yourself. these are Very cool.
Though i have only had them for a week, they seem to be built to last. i will re-post if they fall apart anytime soon.
finally, these are made in china, HOWEVER, they are sweatshop free. if you go to the Simple website, you can read up on their policies concerning labour. this is very important to me, and i think anyone who educates themselves to the abuses committed at the behest of our global economic policy will come to agree. they are also made using recycled and sustainable materials, for those of you worried about our impact on the earth.
They are also vegan, i am not, but they are. i can see the logic in this, as the leather used for manufacturing goods does NOT come from the same cows that we eat. for a while, i was a vegetarian who thought, "well, so long as cows are dying to be used for meat, i may as well use the leather so it doesn't go to waste." i was wrong. the majority of the leather we use here in the USA comes from india and china. there are NO animal rights in the industry, and buying leather is not simply using up what is already there... it is an industry in itself, and animals are maimed and abused JUST for their leather. i am not vegan, and i still have some leather goods kicking about my apartment, however, i think i will try to avoid buying NEW leather, and maybe this will be doing my part, or whatever...
oh, one last thing... they are made out of recycled stuff, so basically, they smell like car tiers. it isn't overwhelming, but it is noticeable. this may go away after some use, but i don't know yet. so if for some reason, you can't stand the smell of car tiers, or you are one of those people with a "new shoe smell" fetish, maybe these aren't for you.
anyway, great shoes.
